Here is the feedback of a Medical school student. Anna, a medical undergraduate student at the University of Berlin, is passionate about her future profession. She will tell us about her point of view as medical student on what concerns theoretical lectures and practical exercises.
First cycle of medical school
“I was a good school student and I chose health studies after high school because it was fashionable. I went to study in Bonn but I did not rank high enough to have medicine on the first try. The first year is psychologically hard. We mainly use our memory, but we don’t know if we are made for this profession, if we would enjoy being a doctor.
In the end, when I finished fundamental sciences disciplines, and after first stages, I knew I wanted to be a doctor. After an internship to learn the first nursing gestures and procedures, you really start to enter into the medical field. If I could give you only one advice for the first years of medicine, it would be to not feel guilty when you allow yourself a little free time, to watch a movie for example.
In the second year, the disciplines are more practice oriented.
Internal medicine, general surgery and cardiology… but remain still very theoretical. I made a two months practice training, first in internal medicine department, then in general surgery and at the end in cardiology. It was nice but you are still a newby student.”
Second cycle of Medicine
“From my 3rd year, i had practice training in the mornings and lectures in the afternoon. And each month we were changing derpartments.
During the 3 first years , we learn the “normal” human body functionning. Starting from the fourth year , we focus more on pathologies and signs and symptoms.
The three last years, we go to practise in the morning to see the patients. We Took again the disciplines that we saw in the second and third year but more pathology oriented. We follow approximatly the same schedule until the end of the sixth year of medicine.”
